Kuvittele: vaatekomeron ovi aukeaa, ulos astuu tyttö. Maahan saakka roikkuvat helmet, huulipunaa poskilla saakka. Toinen kohtaus: miesten hattu ja viikset. Kolmas kohtaus: Jon Bon Jovi. Ja niin edelleen.
Maija Hirvasen sooloteos Being Greta käsittelee median tuottamaa sisältöä ihmisessä. Sellaista, joka elää yksilössä vain hetken siirtyen sitten seuraavaan kohteeseen, seuraavaan ihmiseen. Teos kartoittaa matkaa, jossa kulttuuriset ikonit johtavat henkilökohtaiseen ja yhteiseen luovuuteen. Being Greta ei ole tarina julkkiksista, vaan teos käyttää kuuluisiin ihmisiin liittyvää kollektiivista muistia viitteenä. Being Greta suitsittaa mielikuvituksen tulemaan – hetkeksi – rakastuneeksi elokuvatähdeksi, Buster Keatonin surullisiksi kasvoiksi tai Suomen presidentti Tarja Haloseksi. Teos kysyy: keneksi haluamme tulla? Mihin tämä johtaa?

‘Being Greta’ deals with the essence of mediated substance that lives in a human being only for a moment, moving then to a next target, the next human. The piece works on turning around the obsession of fame and concentrating to how cultural icons can lead to personal and togetheress creativity. Instead of being about celebrity culture, ‘Being Greta’ uses collective memory linked to famous people as a cultural reference to evoke notions about what attracts the eye, thought and desire. It harnesses the performative imagination to be, for a moment, Greta Garbo in ‘Love’, Willem Dafoe in a desert or the Finnish president Tarja Halonen, giving a speech at the anniversary party of 100 years of women’s right to vote in Finland. Dance becomes an act of re-composing personal and cultural histories. What is Being Greta?
The movement material of the piece originates from cinema, still- images, things picked from streets, memory cumulated over years and moves given to the artist as ‘gifts’.
