Perception Score

Perception Score deals with the exploration of identities produced by contemporary seeing. What values do we perform by our physical/visual selves? What social positions do we form as viewers or the ones to be looked at? Roles of daily camera devices are considered as arenas of performance stories. First impressions turn into surprises when looking takes longer. The project aims towards situations where everyday sight will be studied again.’Perception Score’ is a collaborative project between Anni Gustafsson (SWE) and Maija Hirvanen (FIN). Scenographer Sissel Romme (DK) visits the project as a co-creator from time to time. The work takes place as solo- and group performances, always negotiating the form with the place of the work.

Perception Score project’s work has been part-supported 2006 by NordScen and Finnish- Swedish Cultural Foundation and 2007 by The Regional Arts Council of South-West Finland.

’Perception Score: Just Looking’, 2006, solo performance by Maija Hirvanen.

‘Excuse me, Miss, can I help you?’ - ‘No thank you, I’m just looking.´-

‘Perception Score: Just Looking’ creates performative statements about identities, commenting through experiences that different situations of looking can create. How can the presence of a camera bring out a memory of a Charlie Chaplin-movie, and old family story or the feeling of sweating in a dressing room? Performances at Kiasma Theater/Theater Now- festival and IETM Mobile Home conference, Helsinki. Duration 30 minutes.

Perception Score: stay in process. Work in progress, 2007

For Live Art Festival at Theater Academy in Helsinki, Hirvanen invited dancer Anna-Maija Terävä and light designer Heikki Paasonen to contribute to the project with her. The aim of ’Perception Score: stay in process. Work in progress’ is to present an improvisatorial performance, deviced by actions and light. The audience is invited to make interpretations that will be used as a performance script in the next part of the score.
